After Walt Disney's death in December 1966, the citizens of Marceline lobbied the United States Postal Department to issue a commemorative stamp in his honor, and the department agreed. When the stamp's issuance was announced, Burbank, California, Kansas City, Missouri, Anaheim, California, and Chicago, Illinois, competed with Marceline to host the first-day issuance, but Marceline was chosen for the ceremonies. The Disney family and other honored guests arrived on the Santa Fe Railway Super Chief, renamed the "Walt Disney Special" for the event. Although the United States Postal Department originally ordered 120,000 stamps, unusual demand led to a total production of 153,015,000. A commemorative stamp honoring Walt Disney, Marceline's favorite son, was issued from this post office on September 11, 1968, and the building was named in his honor by Act of Congress P.L.108-110 on November 11, 2003.
