Santa Fe 2546 is a Consolidation-class locomotive with a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement and was classified by Santa Fe as part of the 2535 series. Its medium-sized wheels indicate that it was intended for medium-speed freight duty. Number 2546 was one of 15 locomotives built at American Locomotive Works in Pittsburgh, PA in 1910 for the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad, where its original number was 212. When Santa Fe purchased the bankrupt Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad, which was operating in receivership, in 1928, this locomotive was rebuilt and fitted with dual water injectors and a compressed-air-powered reverser. The engine was given to the City of Marceline by the Santa Fe Railroad in December 1955 and was restored and rededicated on September 12, 1998 in honor of Santa Fe employees who lost their lives while on the job.
