A remnant of a bois d'arc hedge encircled the log cabin of Stephen M. Gose, who lived from 1824 to 1877 and came to Texas from Missouri in 1859. Gose was an early Justice of the Peace, a blacksmith, and a leader of the Methodist church. The spiny trees were planted in 1861 and served as a barrier against prowling Indians.
