Lake Tawakoni State Park is a 376.3-acre state park on the south-central shore of Lake Tawakoni in North Texas, north of Wills Point. The reservoir, built in 1960 on the Sabine River to help supply water to the Dallas area, was named for the Tawakoni tribe, who once lived in the region. Opened in 2002 under a lease with the Sabine River Authority and managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife, the park is known for boating, fishing, camping, trails, and wildlife watching. Its forests and lakeshore support more than 200 bird species and many mammals, and the lake is especially noted for blue catfish. A giant communal spider web in 2007 and a 125-acre fire in 2009 stand out in its brief history.
