Cedars of Lebanon State Park in Wilson County, Tennessee, preserves part of a larger cedar forest and glade landscape shaped by Ordovician limestone, sinkholes, caves, and thin soils that created rare cedar glades. Named for red cedars that reminded early settlers of biblical Lebanon, the area also gave nearby Lebanon its name. Though the glade country was poor for farming, it became important for its unusual ecology, with about 350 plant species, including 29 endemic to cedar glades. After severe damage from logging and poor agriculture, New Deal conservation projects restored the area, which opened in 1937 and later gained recognition as a National Natural Landmark.
