The Whitesboro Grammar School was a one-room public school whose first teacher was Susie Smith. Alice DeVane Jones was an original settler and a devoted teacher for forty eight years, and Inez Kelly Jones Edmonds served as the first principal and taught for forty years. Charlotte Roberson Harmon was the second principal and teacher. Other teachers included Gladys Milby, Cornelia Smith, Lena Askew, Julius Taylor, Louise Kelly, Janet Martin, Jane DeVane, Janet Callaway, Alyce English, Evelyn Johnson, Beulah Houston, Irene Spaulding, Mary Bose, Tokysie Abbitt, Duncan Williams, Sr., Ernestine Ross, Doris Sturdivant, Ethel Purnell, George Mitchell, and Ernest Perkins. George Washington Carver's words expressed the school's guiding ideal: "Education is the key to unlock the golden door to freedom."
