Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood, New Jersey, was completed in 1874 on a site long known for dangerous sandbars and currents at the north end of Five Mile Beach. Built as an active aid to navigation for steamers, coal traffic, and coastal vessels, it was designed by Paul J. Pelz and soon became a refuge during major storms. After damage from an 1913 storm, the structure was moved inland and reopened in 1914. Decommissioned in 1964, it was later preserved through local efforts, returned to service in 1986, restored to its historic appearance, and today functions as both a working lighthouse and a museum.
