Nelson is a giant figure built during the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse by Bear Hollow Wood Carvers, with owners Jason and Cindy Emmons also assisting. The carving took 9 carvers and 5.5 days to complete, with carvers coming from 5 different states. Bear Hollow Wood Carvers also completed another giant named Otis at Patoka Lake at Bear Hollow Wood Carvers Cabin Rentals, and this was their second such giant with plans to create a trail. Nelson measures 18 feet across from shoulder to shoulder and stands 27 feet tall, with feet 7 feet long, equal to a shoe size of 98. Its construction used 300 feet of treated 2'x4' lumber and 5,000 board feet of poplar wood, and the head alone weighs between 600 and 700 pounds. A tractor and plow were incorporated because of Mercer County's strong agricultural background. Mercer County was founded in 1820 and later organized in 1824, has 6 schools, ranks first in the state for agricultural production, has a population of 42,348 people, contains 1,292 farms and 270,984 farming acres, and has an average farm size of 218 acres.
