Archeological Site No. AU-154 is a key prehistoric site in Shenandoah National Park, set along Paine Run where the Blue Ridge meets the Shenandoah Valley. Identified in the early 1970s as part of a broader survey, it was one of fifteen sites found along the run. Excavation recovered more than 2,000 artifacts, mostly jasper and quartzite from local sources. Projectile points associated with the Savannah River and Halifax cultures indicate occupation between 3000 and 1000 B.C. Archaeologists interpret the site as a semipermanent base camp that supported toolmaking, game processing, and plant use, likely serving a broader central role within a connected prehistoric landscape.
