Ministers Island, a tidal island in Passamaquoddy Bay near St. Andrews, is significant for both its deep Indigenous history and its later connection to Sir William Van Horne. Long used by the Passamaquoddy, it contains surviving shell middens recognized as a National Historic Site. The island also saw early Loyalist settlement before taking its name from Reverend Samuel Andrews. In the 1890s Van Horne transformed it into an elaborate summer estate centered on Covenhoven, a large sandstone house, with a notable barn, gardens, roads, and bathhouse. Protected by the province from 1977 and managed since 2006 by a non-profit organization, it preserves Van Horne’s last surviving residence.
