Blackbird State Forest is a 6,000-acre protected landscape in northern Delaware, spread across ten tracts in New Castle and Kent counties north of Smyrna. Established as a state forest in 1941 with the purchase of the 672-acre Tybout Tract, it has grown into a year-round, multiuse area with about 40 miles of trails and opportunities for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, picnicking, and primitive camping. Its Tybout Tract includes a wheelchair-accessible nature trail, while the Meadows Tract’s education center offers exhibits and programs on forestry, wildlife, and conservation. The forest is managed to balance timber production, habitat, recreation, environmental protection, and public education.
