The World AIDS Museum and Educational Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, opened to the public in 2014 to preserve the history of HIV/AIDS, educate the public, and address the epidemic’s social impact. It grew from Pozitive Attitudes, an HIV support group at the Pride Center, after Steve Stagon advocated for an AIDS museum in South Florida because of the region’s central place in the crisis and its large LGBTQ population. After temporary exhibitions, it established a permanent space featuring a historical timeline, exhibits on stigma, traveling shows, and educational programs. As a nonprofit center, it preserves memory and interprets a defining public health crisis of the late 20th century.
