Shieldsborough, now Bay St. Louis, was founded in 1699 as a French settlement. The area was claimed by Spain in 1763 and then by the British in 1780. Named for Thomas Shields, an early settler, Shieldsborough was incorporated on January 21, 1818, by the Mississippi Legislature. The town was renamed Bay St. Louis in 1875.
