Umpqua Hot Springs is a well-known natural soaking site above Oregon’s North Umpqua River, where hot mineral water rises from several geothermal sources into eight travertine soaking pools in a wooded mountain setting. Long before it became a recreation destination, at least four Indigenous tribal groups used the springs for healing and spiritual purposes and regarded them as a no-conflict place. Archaeological evidence shows Indigenous people lived in the Umpqua River region at least 8,000 years before Euro-American settlement. Today the springs are valued both for their mineral water and for their dramatic perch high above the river.
