Boulder Creek Wilderness is a protected backcountry area in Oregon’s southern Cascade Range within the Umpqua National Forest. Established by Congress in 1984, it spans 19,100 acres around Boulder Creek and rises from about 1,600 to 5,600 feet, creating varied terrain. More than 30 miles of trails reach forested valleys, steeper volcanic country, and the Umpqua Rocks Special Interest Geologic Area, where basalt and andesite spires are prominent landmarks and climbing destinations. The wilderness also contains notable old-growth ponderosa pines on Pine Bench. After the 1996 Spring Fire burned much of the area, it became an important place for studying the long-term ecological effects of fire.
