Mount Gilead State Park in Ohio, just east of the village of Mount Gilead, developed from early twentieth-century efforts to dam Sam's Creek. Covering 181 acres, including 32 acres of upper and lower lakes, the park expanded over several decades, with the larger lower lake finished on July 10, 1930. In 1949, the area passed to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Today it serves as a public recreation area offering both land and water activities, including hiking, camping, picnicking, fishing, electric-motor boating, and winter pursuits such as ice skating, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing.
