The Seal Fountain was named for a hand-carved seal that was perched on a mound of stones in the center of the fountain. It originally stood in the center of the atrium when the hotel was built. Ferdinand Cross, a famous local artisan, carved the Seal Fountain. When the hotel was renovated in 1917, Lillian Sinclair Rexford had mosaic tile laid in the atrium and had the Seal Fountain moved from the atrium to its current location. The seal for which the fountain was named is long gone.
