Within the confines of Fort Sullivan, several soldiers killed on August 13, 1779, in a skirmish at Chemung were buried on August 14, 1779. This was attested by Solomon Talada, a soldier in the ranks who returned to live in Athens for the rest of his life, and was corroborated by the finding of skeletons before 1839.
