On the adjacent hill was the right, or western end, of the intrenched line held by Gen. T.J. Wood’s division of the Federal 4th A.C. from July 20-22, 1864. The line extended east 1.5 miles to the intersection of Rock Spring and Cumberland Roads. This formed part of the general Federal movement on Atlanta from the north and east, which had begun at the upper Chattahoochee River crossings on July 17. Early on the 22d, Wood advanced from this position in the general move toward Atlanta and occupied a sector of the line from which siege operations continued until they ended on Sept. 2 with the surrender of the city.
