Atlanta Botanical Garden, a 30-acre garden beside Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta, was incorporated in 1976 after growing from a 1973 citizens’ petition and securing its site through a 50-year city lease in 1980. It expanded from early visitor success into a major horticultural center with the Gardenhouse, Fuqua Conservatory, Children’s Garden, and Fuqua Orchid Center, known for species orchids and specialized high-elevation environments. The 2010 Green Expansion Plan doubled its size, added the Kendeda Canopy Walk and sustainable infrastructure, and reshaped former paved areas into gardens. Seasonal exhibitions and light shows have also made it a major public destination.
