Blue Streak, constructed for Conneaut Lake Park's 1938 season, replaced the aging 1909 Scenic Railway on the same site and quickly became the park's signature attraction. Designed by Edward Vettel Sr. and builder Charles Beares of the T.M. Harton Co. and Pittsburgh's West View Park, this out-and-back wooden coaster features a 77-foot height, a 2,900-foot length, a breathtaking first drop, two classic camel-back hills, a series of short hills after a speedy turnaround, and a long, dark, winding tunnel near the lift hill. One of the historic Vettel trains was refurbished in 2002 and returned to service. It remains one of only two existing examples of Vettel's work, using a unique track design made of multiple wood layers separated into two sections by horizontal cross ties. Blue Streak was also one of the first rides named an ACE Coaster Classic for operating in a traditional manner, and despite uncertainty over Conneaut Lake Park's future beginning in the late 1990s, efforts by community leaders and preservationists have helped keep the park in existence while enthusiasts hope the ride will continue to thrill future generations.
