Shaped by the surrounding terrain, it helps divide nearby coves near Bedford, while the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River cuts through it at The Narrows, a water gap later used by major transportation routes. In Maryland, Evitts Creek runs along its base at Rocky Gap State Park. The mountain’s name is tied to a shadowy early pioneer whose surname and dates remain uncertain, but local tradition places his isolated mountaintop homestead there. More than a single summit, the ridge has long influenced travel, drainage, and regional identity.
