The Dodge Site in northwestern Ohio, north of Bowling Green, preserves evidence of two distinct periods of Native occupation: a Middle Woodland village and cemetery and a later Upper Mississippian presence. Its especially clear stratigraphy sharply separates the two layers, allowing archaeologists to trace the sequence of occupation. Ceramics, stone tools, and other recovered material have supported radiometric dating and helped identify the people who lived there. Though only a small part of the 2.2-acre site has been excavated, it has been important for understanding the western basin of Lake Erie around AD 1300. The larger Middle Woodland component contrasts with an exceptionally thin Upper Mississippian occupation.
