Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, preserves the site of the Battle of Droop Mountain, fought on November 6, 1863, the last major Civil War battle in the state. The park emerged from efforts to protect the battlefield, led in part by Union veteran and legislator John D. Sutton. Dedicated on July 4, 1928, it became West Virginia’s first state park. During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps developed it into a historic recreation area. Its museum, lookout tower, trails, and other features reflect its importance as both a Civil War landscape and an early milestone in the state park system.
