On 21 October 1774, after the Sons of Liberty had forced Colonial Loyalists out of Taunton, Massachusetts, the Taunton Flag was first adopted. It proclaimed loyalty to the Crown, asserted the colonists' rights as Englishmen, and called for a union of the colonies in the quarrel with Britain. It was probably raised with the authority of a resolution of the town meeting.
