Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, stood at the junction of the Tioga and Shamokin war trails. Indians coming over the great divide camped there and made new canoes before embarking westward down the Allegewe. No white man was allowed on these trails until about 1750. It later became an important rafting center near the Bradford oil fields, known for the finest crude in the world. The place was named by the Indians and founded in 1815.
