Since ancient times, this barrier island has provided sanctuary to both people and wildlife. Many threatened and endangered species find refuge here, including sea turtles that nest on its shores. Like the first natives and early settlers, visitors can find tranquility along a wooded trail and a pristine undeveloped shoreline, the way things used to be. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures averaging in the 90s. Winter months bring temperatures in the 40 to 70 degree range, with cold spells dropping into the low to mid-30s. Hurricane season lasts from June 1st through November 30th, with most activity normally occurring in August or September.
