Mosquito Lagoon
Nature
Mosquito Lagoon is a coastal waterway on Florida’s east coast within the Indian River Lagoon system and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, bordered by communities, wildlife refuge lands, and the Kennedy Space Center. Its northern end includes the 4,740-acre Mosquito Lagoon Aquatic Preserve, while much of its central and southern area is now part of Canaveral National Seashore. Shared among protected lands and recreation corridors, it is an important coastal habitat. Restoration efforts have sought to rebuild oyster reef habitat, while recurring brown tide algal blooms have caused major fish kills. The lagoon is also known as the place where Winter, the bottlenose dolphin, was rescued in 2005.
