Leaving the Confederate base at Corinth, Mississippi, in a march that had begun the previous afternoon, the two corps of the Army of the Mississippi, commanded by Major Generals Hardee and Folk, marched north along this road to unite with other units of the army for its attack on the Federal encampment at Shiloh on April 6.
