At this site, Sheriff Pusser stopped his car to check his wife’s injuries when the assailant’s car came back into sight and began firing into the sheriff’s car again. Mrs. Pusser was shot in the head and died. Sheriff Pusser was shot in the face and suffered severe bone and tissue damage, but after spending 18 days in a Memphis hospital, he returned to his position as full time sheriff of McNairy County.
