Fort Hughes was built November 23-27, 1817, by soldiers of the 4th and 7th Regiments, U.S. Infantry. It was named for Pvt. Aaron Hughes, a regimental musician killed in the Battle of Fowltown on November 23, 1817. The site was the scene of the Battle of Fort Hughes on December 15-18, 1817. U.S. troops evacuated it after three weeks, and Lower Creek and Seminole warriors burned it.
