Fort Cobb was established on Oct. 1. 1859 by 1st Cavalry, U.S.A. under Major Wm. H. Emory. Federal troops evacuated the post in May 1861, and a Confederate garrison occupied it in 1862. It served as headquarters for Gen. W.B. Hazen, special Indian Agent, in 1868, and Gen. Phil H. Sheridan was based here in the winter of 1868-69. The U.S. Army abandoned Fort Cobb on March 12, 1869.
