Opened in Anadarko, Oklahoma, on December 2, 1948, this Native American art and cultural museum was established by the United States Department of the Interior and the Oklahoma state government to present the work and traditions of Southern Plains tribal communities in Oklahoma. Its collections include historic and contemporary clothing, regalia, jewelry, household objects, weapons, and art representing the Caddo, Chiricahua Apache, Comanche, Delaware Nation, Kiowa, Plains Apache, Southern Arapaho, Southern Cheyenne, and Wichita. Later renovations expanded exhibition space and education programs, and after a proposed federal closure in 2006 was abandoned, increased funding allowed it to continue operating.
