At Mille Lacs, vacationers in the 1930s might have stayed in a cottage like this one. From 1920 until the 1940s, the Ayers rented out cottages clustered around the Trading Post. Their furnishings were simple, with a couple of beds, a wood stove, a wash stand, a table, and chairs, and guests could get a good meal at the dining hall just east of the trading post. In a 1992 interview, Mille Lacs Band member Letitia Caldwell recalled working at the Trading Post and said that when walleye fishing season began on May 15, people were "crammed to the gills," doubling up in cabins and taking any place to stay so they could go out at daybreak.
