H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area, a South Carolina state park near Cheraw on land once part of Sand Hills State Forest, was established after H. Cooper Black Jr. of Columbia died in 1993. It is the state’s only park set aside for field trials and retriever competitions, while also serving broader outdoor recreation. The grounds include ponds and fields for retriever training, along with stables, kennels, corrals, arenas, trails, and sand roads for equestrian use. Visitors also come for picnicking, fishing, camping, and seasonal hunting. Its importance lies in combining a memorial setting with a working venue for dogs, horses, and recreation.
