Cheraw State Park, in northeastern South Carolina, began in 1934 when the U.S. government and local citizens donated 7,361 acres after residents had already raised funds to create the state’s first park. The Civilian Conservation Corps built Lake Juniper, a 300-acre lake, and many buildings still used there. The park later expanded by 1.4 acres in 1990. Notable as South Carolina’s oldest state park and the largest one created through CCC work, it is known for Lake Juniper, an 18-hole golf course, lakeview cabins, and recreation including fishing and rentals for kayaks, canoes, and non-motorized joy boats.
