Lore
Blowing Rock is a rocky outcrop in the town of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, perched above a gorge at the northern edge of Caldwell County. It is notable for a rare wind effect in which air funnels through the gorge and rises almost vertically along the slopes to the rock. That phenomenon is linked to a Cherokee legend of a brave who leaps into the wilderness below and is lifted back to his lover by the wind, making the site a well-known local lover’s leap story. Privately owned and entered through an adjacent souvenir shop, it also appears in the closing scene of the 2008 film Goodbye Solo.
