This 250 million year old cliff formation, located at 4,000 feet above sea level, is North Carolina's oldest travel attraction and the namesake of the town. It is called The Blowing Rock because the rocky walls of the gorge form a flume through which the northwest wind sweeps with such force that it returns light objects cast over the chasm.
