Midway Cemetery
History
3
During the Reconstruction Era, immigration to Texas expanded and this area was settled between 1870 and 1874. Midway school and Union church were established between 1879 and 1882, along with an adjacent burial ground. The oldest dated headstone in Midway Cemetery is that of James Furney, who died in 1888, although earlier burials exist. Many pioneer settlers, citizens, children and veterans are buried here, including three Civil War soldiers who lived into the 20th century. Sited among large native trees, Midway Cemetery is one of the few remaining tangible reminders of the farmers, workers, business leaders and families of the Midway community.
