Dewey Marsh in central Wisconsin, in the town of Dewey north of Stevens Point, is a wetland landscape of marsh and bog in Portage County. It began as a hunting and fishing trading post associated with local Native Americans and was later acquired by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to preserve its wetland heritage. Its peat-rich character was dramatically revealed when a major fire swept through the marsh in 1974 and continued burning in the bogs until 1976. Today the area is known for its public lands and the nearby county shooting range.
