The Denver Museum of Nature and Science grew from Edwin Carter’s Rocky Mountain bird and mammal collection, begun in Breckenridge in 1868 and brought to Denver in 1892, where it became the nucleus of the Colorado Museum of Natural History. Incorporated in 1900 and opened to the public in 1908, it later broadened into today’s major regional science museum. Its history includes the 1927 discovery near Folsom, New Mexico, of projectile points in an extinct bison, evidence that pushed human presence in North America back more than 10,000 years. With vast collections, major exhibitions, and extensive education programs, it remains a leading scientific institution in the Rocky Mountain region.
