Four to six miles northeast, on State Highway 92 at and near New Hope Church, are the battlefields of New Hope Church and Pickett’s Mill, two notable engagements of the Atlanta Campaign on May 25 and 27, 1864. From a point two miles south of Dallas, Confederate and Federal forces extended northeast on a ten-mile front and maintained daily conflict for ten days, from May 25 to June 4. This Paulding County phase of the Atlanta Campaign was part of Sherman’s flanking operations west and southwest of the Allatoona Mountains. Johnston’s forces held the Federals in this sector until they moved east to the State Railroad.
