On May 26, 1864, Maj. Gen. John A. Logan’s 15th A.C. [US] was posted on the hills north and west of this salient angle of the intrenched line. The Federals fought defensively during the six days of fighting, climaxed on May 28 by a concerted assault on the salient by Lt. Gen. Wm. J. Hardee’s A.C. [CS], in columns of regiments, along the Villa Rica Road, an attack that extended north two miles along the 15th and 16th corps fronts. McPherson’s forces [US] were shifted north from the Dallas front on June 1, pursuant to the Federal move east toward the State Railroad.
