On March 5, 1965, a building at this site serving as a Freedom School and headquarters for Civil Rights workers was firebombed and destroyed. Originally a Baptist school, the building had been donated to the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) by the Sunflower County Baptist Association in 1964.
