Ten Pound Island Light stands in Gloucester Harbor on Ten Pound Island near the harbor’s eastern end in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The current white, black-topped conical cast-iron tower was built in 1881 to replace a stone lighthouse first established there in 1821. It is the only surviving element of a former light station that once included a keeper’s house and oil house. The island later also housed a federal fish hatchery and a Coast Guard seaplane station, now ruins. The lighthouse also holds a place in American art, as Winslow Homer and Fitz Henry Lane painted the first tower, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
