Meriwether County, the “Second Home” of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and birthplace of Georgia Governors Joseph M. Terrell, William Y. Atkinson, and John M. Slaton, was created by act of December 14, 1827, from Troup County. It was named for General David Meriwether (1755-1823), a Revolutionary soldier, legislator, and Congressman who represented the government in various negotiations with the Indians and had unusual influence with their chiefs. The first officers of Meriwether County, commissioned February 7, 1828, were Joseph Weaver, sheriff; Hugh W. Ector, clerk of superior court; A.M. Weathers, clerk of inferior court; Joseph Crockett, surveyor; and John Edmonds, coroner.
