Green River has long served as a crossing and stopping place where early explorers, train passengers, and other travelers paused for meals and overnight rest before continuing on. In earlier years, travelers used J.T. Farrer’s Ferry and the railroad company’s Palmer House Hotel. The John Wesley Powell Museum preserves the story of early river explorers who charted the way for the thousands who now raft the river for excitement and adventure. Pleasure boaters gather there every May for the Green River Friendship Cruise, and the city is especially known for its sweet melons, drawing visitors each September for Melon Days to enjoy cantaloupe, watermelon, and honey-dews.
