Mission San Juan Capistrano, the "Jewel of the Missions," was founded on November 1, 1776 by father Junipero Serra. It is regarded as the most renowned and most beautiful of the California missions. The quaint little Serra Chapel is California's oldest building still in use, and the magnificent ruins of the Great Stone Church are considered the "American Acropolis."
