San Juan Capistrano Mission was founded in 1776 by Padre Junipero Serra as the seventeenth in the chain of twenty-one missions established in Alta California to Christianize and civilize the Indians. Its stone church was destroyed in an 1812 earthquake. During Mexican rule the mission was expropriated, and in 1865 it was returned to the Catholic church by proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln.
