At seventeen years of age, Mechel Silber left Zapytow, Ukraine, in 1909 and arrived at Ellis Island with little more than a dream of America. Beginning his new life under the translated name Max Silver, he built that dream through tireless work, unwavering integrity, and the support of Tappahannock, a small town on the Rappahannock that became his home. A fierce patriot, he volunteered for service in World War I and earned his U.S. citizenship. In 1918 he married Yetta Levin, and by 1929 they had three children, Israel, Carl David, and Sophie. During the Great Depression, Max supported his family by buying and selling whatever he could. After Yetta's death in 1932, he pressed on for the sake of his children. In 1933 he moved to Tappahannock, where the Silvers became only the second immigrant family and the sole Jewish residents. There Max started a salvage operation on the eastern edge of town, moved his family into a modest frame home on Daingerfield Street, and became known for his generosity, exuberant spirit, boundless energy, and his belief in the opportunities America offered. His honesty and integrity shaped both his personal and business relationships and became the values he most wanted to pass to his children and grandchildren. During World War II, his sons Israel and Carl and his son-in-law Bradford Wasserman served overseas, while Max joined the county reserve militia as platoon sergeant and air raid warden. He also endured the loss of his mother and sister in the Holocaust. His drive to start and grow businesses inspired later generations, with his son Carl leading family enterprises and his grandson Larry expanding them across the country in automotive business and real estate development. Max Silver died in 1956, leaving a legacy of family, patriotism, enterprise, and deep roots in Tappahannock.
